Maningrida now has a translation centre and it has been an epic journey! The Kunibídji whose name for this place is Manayingkarírra are the traditional owners. They gave enthusiastic permission for the building of a new Bible Translation Centre down near the beach next to the Church House. There are eleven languages spoken in Maningrida and it is time to have a space where language work can happen. The West Arnhem Area Council of Northern Regional Council of Congress, the UCA church elders of Western Arnhemland, were also enthusiastic supporters of the project.

Mobile Mission Maintenance (MMM) were brought on board to help with designing and building. Their experience in creating prefabricated buildings for the Pacific Region that are steel framed and cyclone coded was invaluable. MMM’s volunteer workforce of retired tradies, engineers and architects constructed the frame in Melbourne, packed it into a container and shipped it to Darwin. Meanwhile the challenges of a late wet season led to a nail biting wait for the slab to happen in Maningrida, but thanks to local Aboriginal contractors the slab was poured and cured just in time for the arrival of the building team.

Praise God for a very worthwhile workshop last month. Our thanks go to the Finke River Mission for the use of their hall once again. It is a very suitable venue for this type of activity, even though we needed to pack up on two evenings to make way for others. There was the usual challenge of unpredictable participation, but a committed group of four Luritja speakers attended every day. Stanley, Douglas, Monica, and Sonya were joined by Joseph for three of the five days. Yuminiya, a Pitjantjatjara speaker, attended on part of two days. Kerry, an Alyawarr speaker, attended on one day.

This is a story of incredible love, remarkable co-operation and amazing grace. On Friday 8th April (2022) two boxes of recently printed New Testaments were carried into the Yirrkala church with much ceremony. Dozens of Yolŋu men, representing Gupapuyŋu, Madarrpa, Maŋgalili and Gumatj, walked in with the boxes of bibles and sang with great reverence, as rhythm sticks split the air with their sharp ‘crack-crackcrack’ defining the rhythm and tempo of local traditional song. We had gathered with hundreds of Yolŋu at Yirrkala Church to dedicate the reprint of the Gumatj New Testament.

Maningrida is one of the most multilingual places in the world – ten plus completely distinct languages spoken every day amongst a population of 3000 people! Most of those languages didn’t have any published Scripture until now. A few months ago, five different languages spoken in Maningrida translated seven verses of the Christmas story (we’ve written about this workshop in a previous newsletter).

These two languages are each spoken by hundreds of people in Maningrida and are the only languages spoken by many, including children. Neither language has any published Scripture but Church leaders for both language groups are keen to see translation occur. The people that came to the workshop have spent many hours working on translation at home in their own time, without any specific training.

There has been a lot of excitement recently with the arrival of the new Pitjantjatjara Shorter Bibles. The previous edition was a best-seller, and since running out of stock in 2016 there has been growing anticipation for the new Bibles.

In 2018-2019 the Pitjantjatjara New Testament was recorded for an audio app, and during the recording process several changes were made to the text. There is something about reading the text aloud in a group that allows people to hear whether the Scriptures sounds natural in their language. As well as updates of the NT, the new Shorter Bible includes the book of Daniel, and many other smaller portions of the OT including 1 Samuel and Psalms.

The first week was tough, we thought there would only be two assessment tasks each day,
but every day there were three to four assessment tasks each day at least! In the first week we
were sitting in our own language groups but Sandra Makurlngu (Maung translator) had to join
us. In the second week we all got separated and the men all sat together. It was manymak

We studied the ethics of translation, professional development as well as our roles and responsibilities as translators and looking at our career goals. We looked at the differences between interpretation and translation. I am glad that we are going to graduate with a Diploma, this course will push us forward so that we can do our job properly and become good translators so that we can focus on our main goals.

Newsletter December 2018

Coordinate’s mission is to support Indigenous people to access Scripture so that joy is brought to their hearts. We achieve this through supporting Bible translation and Scripture in Use work in the heart languages of the people in our regions and congregations of the Uniting Church in the Northern Synod. These are complex projects that take considerable time, expertise and resource. We also know that the most effective ways of working are to tap into the passions of our translators and Scripture in Use workers, to be guided by the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives and to learn to adopt ways of working that reflect the cultures of our Indigenous colleagues.

None of this is possible without the support, expertise and enthusiasm that our partner organisations bring to these projects. So in late November Coordinate held a two-day meeting in Humpty Doo at the Living Water UCA meeting space, inviting partners to join us in exploring how best to achieve our joint mission.

The last three chapters of Mark had already been completed in time for Easter earlier this year, so only Mark chapter one to thirteen remained. After a slow start, we got extra help from Mayalil and Dipililŋa. Then for the second week Coordinate assisted Rhoda Goluŋ to come over from Galiwin’ku to join the checking. Progress moved more quickly, and all were delighted to see the checking finished by the end of the second week - earlier than we expected.

We’ve been in Alice just 10 days now. We have had four people recording. The brother of one died this week from illness. A young 23 year old cousin of another was killed in a car accident last night. Some are working Saturday so we can go out to the funeral of a lady on Monday (a 2 hr drive from here). This lady was planning on recording but her life was cut short having had a heart attack when she was a passenger in a gruesome accident several weeks before the recording event... I can only say that the hope and stability of Christians really stands out and I admire them.

Paul is busy but it is not as pressured as our last recording time in Adelaide. In the evenings he takes people to see relatives in hospital, or to join grieving relatives for good cries and support, at any rate, this has been the case this week.

Newsletter August 2017

This story starts way back in October 2015 when Coordinate held a workshop at Riyalla south of Darwin. Since then people have been asking “when will the next workshop be?” These workshops are so valuable, to get people from many different language groups together so that they can network and learn from each other. They are also very expensive to run so they need to have a very strong purpose other than just a social get together. Finally in October last year at the Pitjantjatjara translators conference Ina Scales presented a session called “Getting in the Zone” on how to prepare ourselves for reular disciplined work. We now had a theme for our workshop.

We booked into Riyalla at Noonamah and organised travel by plane, car and bus for twenty-nine translators and Scripture in Use Workers representing eleven different languages; four languages from West Arnhemland, six from East Arnhemland and one from the APY lands in Central Australia. After devotions on the first morning we worked out our kinship relationships and then got down to work.

This year we held our first traslators conference at Umuwa, a small community south of Ernabella that is the base for many Government services to the APY Lands. One translator remarked how good it was to be away from some of the distractions in the community to focus on the Old Testament translation.

The week was a great success. There were about 10-15 Pitjantjatjara translators who were able to attend, coming mainly from Amata and Ernabella, but also Oodnadatta and Adelaide. Some of the highlights included talking about some of the challenges of translating the Old Testament when working in busy communities, with little or no workspace and while facing the on-going challenges of caring for family. We talked about what it meant to ‘get into the zone’ for translation work, and how prayer and our own reading of God’s word are crucial for this task.

Following the re-enactment of the arrival of the good reverend by a dinghy named kupuny (dugout canoe) at Angumidjban, with the initial fear of the people being overcome by curiosity at the arrival of this strange balanda (European) in their midst, everyone moved to the Church where the official dedication ceremony took place. The action is called Marrmurrng which is a traditional exchange ceremony.
It was a challenging tour from Beersheba in the South to Dan in the North. Caesarea to the west and the Dead Sea in the East. We travelled through the stories of the Bible starting with Abraham and Sarah’s life as we camped in a Bedouin Oasis, rode camels and explored the well built by Abraham at Bethsheeba. Walked in King David’s footsteps from his encounters with Goliath at the Valley of Elah and Saul at EinGedi by the Dead Sea. Through the centre we visited Shiloh where Samuel was raised and the site of the first Tabernacle. To Qum Ran and the community of scribes that copied the Bible with such faith and dedication.

At first it was a struggle to find the right front translation, we tried Djambarrpuyŋu and then Kunwinjku and finally the Top End English Front Translation proved to be the one that worked for us. The final 2 months when we all worked together in Darwin were hard, we had to work so quickly and it was amazing to see how far we could push ourselves but also the work was exhausting!

I began this year very differently by travelling to Dallas, USA with Jan Mountney to study at GIAL. We studied ‘Scripture Engagement Methods’ under four very qualified and internationally recognised staff.

My wife Mary and I continue to visit West Timor because we can clearly see how God is at work in the bible translation and scripture-in-use work there. We believe that God has called us to support and encourage that work and to do what we can to enable it to be fruitful.

On previous visits we have been able to get to know many people who are part of the translation and scripture-in-use teams and we have attended the dedication of 2 New Testaments in local languages. Our 5-week visit in March-April 2014 enabled us to participate in a number of ways with activities in Kupang and the surrounding areas.

The highlight for me was a 6-day trip across the mountains to Betun, not far from the East Timor border, where the Tetun New Testament was dedicated last year. With Ben Grimes and 3 others, I helped lead 4 one-day workshops on how to use the Scriptures.

Between 25 and 30 church leaders gathered at each workshop, representing 23 local congregations over 4 days. We shared with them how important it is to read and apply the Scriptures, how we can use the Scriptures personally, and how to run a bible study in a group. We gave them the experience of doing a study with examples of the sort of questions which can be asked, and we talked about how to handle difficult issues.

God is prompting lay people and pastors to get involved in disciplined study of the Scriptures, with small groups meeting together following the workshops. Church attendance in West Timor is relatively high compared with Australia, but too few people are biblically literate.

We can expect to see great things happening in West Timor churches, with the Scriptures becoming more and more available in local languages, and with the appointment of the wonderfully-gifted Ben Grimes as Coordinator of the Scripture-in-use work.

I was once again inspired and impressed by the leadership skills of Barbara and Chuck Grimes (AuSIL). They have built a wonderful team, and they are enabling the members of the team to use and develop their gifts.

The Moderator of the GMIT Synod, the Rev. Bobby Litelnoni welcomed us warmly and expressed his gratitude for our regular visits and the partnership that exists. We are blessed to be able to have an association with God’s work in West Timor.

Pray that God would continue to build his church through GMIT, UCA and AuSIL.

During the dry season in Northern Australia, Heather Hewett returned for a month to work with the Maung translators, Rosemary Urabadi and Sandra Makurlngu. The three ladies spent 2 weeks together on Goulburn Island, before travelling to Darwin for an intensive workshop in Humpty Doo.

Heather reports, “It was a wonderful time in Darwin. Each day, we got up and got to work when we were ready. We started around 10, but we kept working into the evenings! Such a lot of work got done, and because we’re getting near the end of the first draft, the ladies have been so enthusiastic. Sandra called me today to say that she finished chapter 15!” Rosemary, Sandra and Heather have been working on Mark’s Gospel in Maung for 5 years, also with support from the church on Goulburn Island, and the NRCC staff worker Lindsay Parkhill. Their shared dream is to dedicate a published Gospel in June 2016, to coincide with the centenary of the first mission in Warruwi.
