COORDN8 Issue #7 March 2012

After the annual ‘OurWord’ refresher in Darwin, Berribob and Elizabeth flew to their Manmoyi homeland in the stone country South East of Jabiru, with the Gospel of Mark firmly in their sights. The focus of their translation is Manmoyi Kunwinjku. Already lively telephone conversations are planning a mid-year meeting at Jabiru, when the rivers go down, to download the work in progress. They are using a laptop put together by Stuart Cameron, a translator and technician from AuSIL.

In the last two years, there have been some amazing developments in Bible translation into indigenous languages. In North East Arnhem Land alone, 7 new projects have started with 3 more waiting in the wings to begin. How could this happen so quickly? Yurranydjil, a translator and translation advisor says: “We’ve got a program called ‘OurWord’ supported by AuSIL for translating Scriptures into different languages. Katrina said, “We would like to begin translating the rest of the Old Testament into Pitjantjatjara.” Makinti added, “The Old Testament contains lots of good stories that we can learn from.”

For several years now, Sunday mornings for Mary Nankivell are focussed on driving the 15 km from Derby to Mowanjum to help set up for worship, a children’s activity, singing and most importantly, the morning tea afterwards. The principal components for worship are her guitar, chorus books and ‘With Love To The World’ (to assist with the lectionary readings for the week). These days Mary has an extra item to take with her - sufficient photocopies of the gospel reading in Worrorra and English, emailed weekly from Newcastle, NSW.

If you fly over Western Arnhem Land, it appears to be vast areas of wilderness with little sign of human habitat. But looks are deceptive. There are many people in different language groups calling this area home, and exciting things have been happening in the church there.
